Maj. JOHN ADAMS DANA, born Princeton, Mar. 10, 1823; died Sept. 6, 1900; married Nov. 26, 1860, ELIZA HENSHAW (BATES) SMITH, born Northampton in 1823, died Mar. 19, 1900, daughter of U.S. Senator Isaac C. and Martha H. Bates, and widow of Charles Fuller Smith. He grad. Yale College with honors in 1844. He was commissioned major in Mass. Militia, 1850; Division Judge Advocate, 1850-56; for nearly fifty years member of the Worcester Fire Society. He was a lawyer in Worcester; assistant city marshal in war time; assistant clerk of courts, 1864-77; clerk of courts, 1877-82. At one time he was a member of the school board.

The three sons of Mrs. Dana by her first husband assumed the name of Dana; Alfred Fuller Smith became Alfred Wadsworth Dana; Charles Henshaw Smith became Charles Henshaw Dana; Isaac Chapman Bates Smith became Isaac Chapman Bates Dana.
