Obituary of Norman Farrar

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Norman C. Farrar, beloved husband of 43 years of the late Elisabeth Farrar, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at the Kentwood Nursing Facility at the age of 84. He is survived by one daughter, Karen Farrar of Martinez, and four sons, Norman Farrar and Bruce Farrar of Dallas, TX; Mark Farrar and wife Leslie of Santa Cruz, CA; and Kirk Farrar and wife Susan of Atlanta, GA; several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition, dear friend, Elfriede McLean and her daughters. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, son of the late Paul C. and Helen A. (Burnham) Farrar, Norman was a direct descendant of Isaac Farrar, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Norman retired from the U.S. Army as a Lt. Colonel in 1971 after 20 years of service, including a tour of duty in Vietnam from November of 1968 to October of 1969. After retiring from the Army, he began a career in the new field of computer software engineering, where he worked on word processing applications for Morris Communications, and developed one of the first spell-checking applications. Also during this time, with a full-time job and five teenagers at home, he returned to college as an evening student and earned a Masters degree. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as treasurer, greeter and in several other offices since 1973. Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Schwartz officiating. Entombment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the staff of Kentwood Nursing Facility for the compassionate, attentive care they gave to our father. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 402 Aumond Road, Augusta, GA 30909 or to a charity of one's choice. The family will receive friends Monday Evening, July 9, 2012 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home and Tuesday morning July 10, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the church.
