C. E. Wheeler is Taken By Death

Pioneer Ellensburg Merchant Dies in Los Angeles Sunday

Word of the death of C. E. Wheeler, 76, pioneer former Ellensburg merchant, in Los Angeles on Sunday was received here today. He died following an illness of several weeks with heart trouble.

Mr. Wheeler had been a resident of Ellensburg from the early 1890's until he and Mrs. Wheeler moved to California 14 years ago. During much of his residence here he was in business. In the early days he operated a book store and bicycle shop on the east side of Pearl street and later his store was located on the west side south of Fourth street.

He disposed of his book store to W. R. Craig and with his son-in-law, E. W. Moore, launched a drug store at a location now occupied by the Elton hotel lobby. He sold the drug store to Tom Bostic and took over the book and stationery store again. He sold it to G. W. Patterson in 1927.

Mrs. Wheeler and a daughter, Mrs. Nadine Moore of Los Angeles, survive. A son, Leon Wheeler, died in the torpedoing of an American vessel during the World war in September, 1918, while enroute home from England to receive a commission as captain. He is one of the men for whom Austin-Rees-Wheeler post of the American Legion here was named.

Funeral services are to be held tomorrow in Los Angeles.
