Obituary of Anthony Duane Andrews

Anthony D. Andrews, of Bel Air, died at home on Saturday, February 28, of congestive heart failure. He was 76.

Born in Ithaca, New York, in 1932, he was the only son of the late Anthony and Ruby Litch Andrews, of Ithaca.

He worked in Ithaca for many years as a department manager at the A&P Grocery store and in the evenings served as proctor at Ithaca College Library, ensuring a satisfactory study environment for students. After moving to Maryland, he worked as a custodian at Bel Air High School and as groundskeeper at C. Milton Wright High School. One of his chief joys of his life was the association that he had with CMW students and faculty alike.

He enjoyed reading, especially British and American history and British Naval history, and was a great admirer of Winston Churchhill. He also enjoyed listening to classical music, especially the music of Mozart and of the composers of the Baroque period. He attended regularly the concerts of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra.

Another strong interest was researching his family genealogy. His nearly photographic memory enabled him to remember in great detail marriages, births, and other genealogical statistics. He made frequent trips to New England and discovered connections to the Balch family of Beverly and Salem, Massachusetts, and to Lancelot Andrews, one of the authors of the King James Bible, among others. He was especially proud of his connection with the earliest members of the Adams family of Quincy, Massachusetts, and visited the Adams historical sites.

He was a member of the Colonel Aquila Hall Chapter of the Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution, serving one term as its president. He also belonged to the Sons of Colonial New England, the New England Historical Genealogical Society, the Balch Family Association, the Fairbanks Family Association of America, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Umbarger Andrews, of Bel Air; three sons, A. Wayne Andrews, of Slaterville, NY, Mark H. Andrews, of Ithaca, NY, and Timothy K. Andrews, of Slaterville, NY; two sisters, Olympia McFall, of Spencer, NY, and Suzanne Andrews, of Gainesville, FL; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a grandson, Anthony Andrews.

He will be interred during private services in the family plot at South Hill Cemetery, Ithaca, NY. Funeral arrangements are being handled by McComas Funeral Home of Bel Air and Bangs Funeral Home of Ithaca.
