SAMUEL HARTWELL. He shipped on board a whaler for the South Seas, but after six months aboard, shocked at the tragic death of a shipmate crushed under a whale's fin, he left the ship and made his way via London and New Orleans to New York; shipped 1846 on U.S. frigate United States, cruising three years on the coast of Africa and up the Mediterranean. After marriage, he was a farmer in Lunenburg; enlisted Sept. 9, 1861, F 25th Mass. Vols; re-enlisted Jan. 1, 1864; under Burnside in Newberne campaign, later under Grant in Army of Potomac.
