LIEUT. JOHN POPE of U.S. Navy. He was midshipman May 30, 1816; Lieut. 1826; Commander 1843; Captain 1855; Commodore July 16, 1862. He commanded several sloops, two frigates, one line of battle ship, China squadron, Portsmouth Navy Yard. Known throughout the service as "Honesty John."
