From 1824 to 1832 he was a merchant and postmaster of Carlton Place, Ont., removed in 1835 to Westmeath, first magistrate and postmaster. As there was no physician within 60 miles, he dealt out medicines and set broken bones. From 1853 to his death he was Lt. Col. of militia; a leading, trusted citizen.
