Abraham Smith, oldest son of Isaac, was born Canaan, Dec. 29, 1775, and lived on what is now West Front Street in the house he built, or his father for him, which has always been known as the oldest house in the village -- a convenient home for him on account of his work at the Island mills. Later he moved to what is now Canaan and lived near the village, where he was a farmer and mill-operator, and where he died Feb. 13, 1853. He married Oct. 23, 1799, Mehitable Pollard, daughter of Timothy, born Jan. 1, 1784. They had children: Two named Timotny, died in infancy; Hannah, married Moses Ricker of Canaan; Osgood, married, 1st, Hannah Page, 2d, Philomena Pollard Gowen; george Ulmer; Lucinda, who became 3d wife of Moses Ricker. Osgood Smith returned to Bloomfield and lived from 1850 on the lower River Road. Three of his sons were in the Civil War, of whom Llewellyn Clayton and Benjamin Franklin died in the south in service.
