Obituary of John C. Stephens

John Stephens passed away at 12:45 p.m. March 29, at a local hospital at the age of 64 years, 10 months, 23 days. He was born at Brownsville, May 5, 1884, the son of the late Henry and Martha stephens. He was a life time resident of Nemaha county.

He was married to Ruth Butterfield of Brock, March 14, 1914. To this union were born four sons and two daughters.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife Ruth, daughter Mrs. Meryle Tunks, sons Robert of Pawnee City, Ifan of Seattle Washingotn, Fred and Marvin of Brownsville, daughter Jo Ann at home, several granddaughters and two grandsons. One borther, Robert Stephens of Brownsville, one sister, Mrs. Clara Neal of Hastings. Several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He has been in ill health for the past few years, but his sudden death was a shock to his loved ones. He was a kind and devoted husband and father. Was always pleased to have his family relatives and friends visit him and in his quiet, kindly manner, welomed the grandchildren as they came to the home, some part of each day.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Brownsville iwth the Rev. Eard Merritt officiating.

A quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Roberts, Mrs. Amelia Young and Mr. Holland sang "Going Down the Valley One by One," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Ivory Palaces," with Mrs. Frances Thomas at the piano.

Pallbearers were: Robert Sage, Donald McMann, Wallace Bridgewater, Charles Clifton, Clifford Bice and Kinley Kelley.

Services were in charge of Casey funerah home of Auburn.

Burial at the Brownsville cemetery.
